Jobs for Minnesotans issues statement opposing cancellation of Twin Metals mineral lease

September 16, 2026

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

St. Paul, MN: Last week, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) canceled a mineral lease held by Twin Metals. The lease cancellation comes on the heels of an executive order from Governor Tim Walz that pauses all leasing and permitting in the Rainy River watershed. Jobs for Minnesotans opposes the decision, which will have permanent implications for the economy and jobs in northern Minnesota.

See below for a joint statement from the Board of Directors:

“The DNR’s decision to cancel one of Twin Metals Minnesota’s state mineral leases is disappointing. The critical minerals industry has powered our state’s economy for generations, and this is a significant blow to the Iron Range, its communities, and its people. Minnesotans deserve access to good-paying jobs close to their homes that support their families–and mining represents a key opportunity to ensure that access. Moreover, the decision impacts our public schools by removing potential revenue from School Trust Lands. Minnesota companies, workers, and communities deserve a fair, consistent, and science-based process to help encourage investment and job creation.”
